Red White & Bluegrass is a group that was started many years ago by patriarch, Red White. Red recorded for Star Day Records and Rural Rhythm. You can still find some of his songs today on Rural Rhythm in many different stores and Rural Rhythm’s web site. When his oldest daughter, Gwen turned 8, she began singing with the group and at age 12, began playing the upright bass. They had to cut a TV show one night and Red’s bass player called and quit. Red showed Gwen G, C, & D positions on the bass, and with Gwen’s knowledge of piano, she recorded 2 shows that night playing bass and continued until her accident. Red’s youngest daughter, Barbara, began singing at age 13. Her first gig was playing snare (which she had never played before) for Benny Martin. Gwen now plays the guitar and Barbara the upright bass. They both have enjoyed many years of radio and 16 years of television on WECT-TC Channel 6 out of Wilmington, NC. In the 1970’s, they met a young banjo picker from Monroe, NC by the name of Randy Smith. He began pickin the banjo for Red White & Bluegrass. After his tenure with this group, they met up again, 30 years later. He has been pickin with the band for 4 years. The newest member of the group is Eddie Gardner. He is the brother of Jenni Lynn that picks mandolin for Della Mae. Eddie will be singing lead/harmony and picking guitar for the group.
They have traveled up and down the eastern seaboard playing Bluegrass Festivals in the 70’s & 80’s. Then they began playing private gigs at Kiawah Island (south of Charleston, SC) about 7 nights a week for 16 years. They also played private gigs in Myrtle Beach, SC for 7 years. In 1993, Gwen was in an accident and was told that she would never walk again -- But this was not to hold her back! It took quite a few years, but with a positive mental attitude, hard work and the Grace of God, she began walking again and able to stand and play the guitar. Red passed away in January, 2000. The girls are now “Carrying On the Family Tradition” that was passed down to them from their father, Red.
If you would like to have them perform for your venue, please contact:
